Some Examples of Large Dog Breeds

If you have a large back yard or need a dog for protection, a large breed can be your best friend. Large dogs, even if they are the friendliest in the world, can be intimidating, and just their size can be enough to ward of people that would do you or your family harm. They too can be a companion dog, and many larger dogs are trained to take care of the blind and disabled. There are many different breeds for herding, and hunting, with Saint Bernard, and Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies as some of the largest. These breeds are seen pulling sleds and carrying heavy loads.

If you are looking for a guard dog, there are several good breeds that are large and powerful, some that were used to guard ancient palaces and castles. Some of these breeds are bull mastiff, boxer, and pit bull to name a few. They are large and stocky, have a quiet disposition and a large bite. They are slower, but their power more than makes up for it. While not extremely large in size, these breeds can weigh half as much as a full grown man.

For a combination of speed and strength, some other popular guard dogs are Doberman pincers, and German Shepherds. These dogs are usually found being in the military or police forces. While they have been seen to be loud and intimidating, they can also be trained to be silent and deadly. The German Shepherd is seen mostly with law enforcement that have families, because of their even temperament around children.

Despite what you may think, these dogs are not mean and don't deserve a reputation of a dangerous dog. It isn't the dog, it is the owner who is responsible. Dogs are trained to fight crime, but the can also be trained to be mean. They are protective of the family or person that are watching over, but it is also the owner's responsibility to curb their animal, or make sure they can get out of their yards. Large breeds who are abused do have a harder time adjusting to a new owner.

If your dog spends a lot of time in your backyard you are going to have to get a dog house for them. You can build a simple "A" frame as long as there is a floor that sits above the ground. It should also be covered on all three sides. You need to make sure they have a clean water dish, even if they have their meals indoors. Long hair breeds need to be groomed regularly so they don't pick up burs and get tangled. If your dog stays out for long periods of time, they should be checked for ticks.

A large breed dog can be hard to handle at times, especially when they are young. You should at least do some basic training courses with your new dog, you will be much happier in the long run, and so will anyone else who is walking by. You can find local trainers online, and there are even some online courses you can try. If you want more information on which large breed do may be right for you, there are several websites, the American Kennel Club, and the Humane Society are just a few.
