Although, most people prefer getting home adorable puppies, some may bring a mature dog as companion. It is always said that puppies respond to house training better than adult dogs. This is true to some extent considering that adult dogs are a bit rigid in their manners. Moreover, they are used to doing certain things in certain manner for a considerable period of time. Although, it is difficult to break this habit of theirs, with little patience and training, you can certainly house train them. So, how can you house train an older dog? How long does it take for house training an older dog? Given below are some housebreaking tips which will enable you to understand how to house train an older dog. How to House Train an Older Dog: Tips Watch His Behavior As soon as you bring the older dog home, you should start watching his general behavior. Monitor what time he sleeps, when does he like to eat and drink and of course, when does he relieve himself. Check what are the places where he likes to go back to for relieving himself. During this period, it is obvious that you will have to deal with many accidents. But, unless you know your dog's habits, dog training is impossible. Confine Him If it is not possible for you to watch dog behavior round the clock, keep him in a crate. Confining is the best way if you want to know about how to potty train an older dog when you are not around. The crate should be just large enough for him to sleep and roll over. Dogs like their sleeping area clean hence, it is unlikely that your dog will soil his crate. However, do not forget to take him out for attending nature's call. If your dog has to hold his bladder for too long, then he might become irritable and impatient. Schedule His Day Make a schedule for your dog and stick to it as a rule for housebreaking an older dog. This will help to regularize his activities. Older dogs have no trouble following a schedule. Everyday, give him food and drink at the same time, take him for a walk at the same time of the day and put him to sleep precisely at the same time every night. Take him out for attending nature's call after 15 to 20 minutes of giving him food and water. If your dog empties his bladder before that, take him out within 10 minutes the next day. Assign a fixed 'potty place' for your dog and always take him to that place only. Catch Him in the Act If in spite of all your attempts, your dog begins to relieve himself where he shouldn't, catch him right in the middle of the act. Stomp your feet or clap your hands to gain his attention, leash him and immediately take him out to potty place. Let him do his unfinished business here. Reward him when he finishes it. After two or three such incidences, your doggie will get a cue regarding where to attend his nature's call. Give Clear Commands It is important to communicate with your dog in a clear way. Older dogs understand commands better than puppies, hence if you give repeated commands everyday, your dog will get your point in few days. However, it is a must that you stick to same words, phrases everyday. Use only a single command everyday to tell your dog where he is supposed to attend nature's call. If you use different words everyday to mean the same thing, you will confuse your dog. Do Not Punish It is obvious that you will have a few accidents during the initial days of house training your dog. Remember, your dog is only doing a natural thing, hence, punishing him will do no good. Your dog will take his own time to learn the human ways of living. Always make sure you clean the place where your dog accidentally soiled with a good deodorizing cleaner. If you don't, the smells will force your dog to return to the same place again.
