The Training Basics You Need to Teach Your New Puppy

Puppies are cute and adorable, even when they are doing things they aren't supposed to. This is why so many people end up with a dog that has horrible habits as he gets older. It's cute when they are puppies, but when your dog grows up, those cute things won't be as cute anymore. For this reason, training your puppy as young as possible is going to be important. You want to train your puppy so you get a well behaved adult dog and avoid any bad behavioral problems in the future. There are some training basics every puppy should know, so here is a look at the things you definitely should be teaching to your puppy.

Potty training is one of the most important and basic things that you need to be teaching your puppy. The sooner you teach this to your puppy, the sooner you can stop having to clean up messes in your home. It is no fun to clean up a mess and those messes can leave your home smelling bad. Start teaching your puppy to go to the bathroom outside when you send them out. It's not as difficult as it sounds and it will definitely save you a lot of trouble in the future.

Teaching your puppy not to jump or bite is another of those basics that you need to start teaching them as soon as possible. It doesn't seem to be a big problem when your puppy jumps when they are small. However, when they get larger, it can definitely be a big problem. Biting as a puppy is kind of cute and playful, but this is something that can become a dangerous habit. Don't allow your puppy to get away with jumping or biting while they are small. The faster they realize that this is unacceptable, the faster you will break them of this bad behavior. This way you don't deal with these habits when they get older.

There are some basic commands that your puppy should be taught as well. One of those basic commands is to "come." Your puppy should learn to come to you when they are called. Another basic is "sit." You want your puppy to obey you and sit on command. "Stay" is also an important command so they stay put when you tell them too. While these commands are basic, your puppy needs to learn them early. These commands may end up saving them from danger later on, so they are important for the safety of your puppy.

Training your puppy not to bark all the time is important too. No one wants to listen to a dog bark all night and often puppies use barking to get attention. Many puppies will bark if you make them go in their kennel, just wanting you to come back and give them attention. Training them not to bark can save you from dealing with sleepless nights and irate neighbors in the future.

It's important that you teach puppies what they can and cannot chew on. Puppies love to chew and even many adult dogs enjoy chewing. A chewed up sock or slipper is only funny once. You want to make sure that your puppy will not destroy your property, especially if you are letting your puppy live in the house. While they are young, teach them what they are allowed to chew on, such as toys. Also make sure they understand that other items are off limits when it comes to chewing.
