Eating Disorder Treatments: How Support Groups Can Help

When it comes to eating disorders, it is good to know that there are treatments that a person can go through to be able to recover from this condition. When it comes to eating disorder treatments, there are several possible ways which a person can do to help people go back to their normal eating habits.

There are different treatments for the different kinds of eating disorders. For disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, the treatment most of the time requires the person to go through conditioning to restore healthy weight levels and habits. Most people with these conditions also go through different therapy sessions to help them combat their unhealthy eating conditions.

For anorexia nervosa, the treatment usually consists of several stages. The first stage is to get the person into a healthy body weight. The second stage is to introduce eating as a healthy habit by setting patterns of proper nutrition. Lastly, therapy is required to allow the person to identify the negative thoughts and habits pertaining to their eating and body image and to channel them to positive ideas to help them fight against their issues against their weight and being thin. Therapy also helps in the sense that people struggling from anorexia nervosa are given the chance to resolve their personal struggles by interacting with groups, with their families and confronting the issues that contributes to their abnormal eating habit.

For bulimia nervosa, the cycle of overeating and purging is eliminated at first. Through the elimination of the bingeing and purging cycle, normal eating patterns are reintroduced as well as triggers that may cause the person to start overeating again are avoided. Unhealthy thoughts and patterns relative to eating and weight are also changed by challenging the person s ideas regarding them. Sometimes, in order to help reduce the urge to binge, anti-depressants are prescribed to the person with bulimia to help control overeating and resolve the depression that usually accompanies bulimia.

The types of therapy involved in these eating disorder treatments include cognitive therapy, behavior therapy, family therapy, and group therapy.

In cognitive therapy, unhealthy thoughts regarding eating are talked about in order to increase awareness and to improve self-esteem. In behavior therapy, healthy eating habits and patterns are reintroduced to the person with the condition. Family therapy includes the admittance of the problem especially for people who are in self-denial of having an eating disorder. Group therapy allows people suffering from these conditions to interact with each other and to aid in reducing their isolation by knowing that someone out there is suffering with the same conditions that they have.

People with these conditions go through a lot of emotional and physical sufferings that they usually keep to themselves. Most of the time, because of the feelings that are present in these situations like guilt and shame for bulimia, and self-worthlessness and self-denial in anorexia, persons with these conditions feel isolated and often ends up inflicting pain to themselves by being harsh and hiding what they feel. What they need are open arms to accept them despite who they are and what is happening to them because they may be feeling weak and alone. The best way to help is to advise them to seek help and take the extra step to lend a welcoming hand rather than make them feel guilty for the things that they go through. Eating disorders are motivated by many factors and people caught in it don t need blame but acceptance and understanding from the people around them.
