Depression symptoms What are they

People manifest depression in different ways, but there are some general depression symptoms that can be observed. You must take into account that these symptoms do not all manifest at the same time, because personalities differ. Some would like to put up a public image that they are strong, and would therefore be more secretive in expressing their depression. Whereas, some others would be more willing to show their depression. In both cases, you must be willing to feel for your friends or loved ones, and be more observant at that. Whether or not they would admit that they are indeed depressed, depression is always caused by the lack of means to cope with sadness. Your presence and genuine concern is most important for them.

One of the most common depression symptoms is the change of mood and interest of the person. The person might usually be cheerful and energetic in his or her work, but all of a sudden you might notice that he or she is becoming more silent and less open about his or her feelings. Or the person might give comments on how sad or empty he or she feels. Although most people would discount such comments, you have to be sensitive and probe further. Know what’s causing the change in mood and the unusual comments from the person. It would be a welcome gesture to know that you are genuinely interested in hearing him or her out.

Depression symptoms also include the loss of appetite and energy to do happy activities. You might observe that the person no longer eats as much as he or she usually does, and would be unwilling to accommodate other people’s invitations for dinner for no reason. You might also observe that the person would not have the energy to go out and have fun, and would rather stay at home, again for no reason. He or she might say that work needs to be done (on a Friday night, which should be unusual). These should call your attention. You should try to approach him or her to understand what causes the depression and change in attitude.

As the depression symptoms vary, the approach should also vary. You must be sensitive in expressing how you observe the symptoms, so that the person would not feel you are intruding on the feelings that they might feel as something very personal. But depression is a cry for help and support. And if you truly care about the person, it should not be so bad to try to meet the person halfway into the sadness that he or she feels.
