Thinking Slows Down Your Productivity

Copyright (c) 2009 Bryan Beckstead

Wait a Minute Here

I thought I might get some of you to take a second look. Let me explain.

Stressed out people are not productive People

There are many ways to get stressed out. I will just address one or two here, as they pertain to this topic. The heart of any attempt to get more done and be more productive lies in you investing time in planning, preparing and getting organized prior to expending any energy. When you add all of this preplanning activity up, it sounds suspiciously like thinking, doesn't? So what is the catch?

Have you ever had a large task looming ahead of you? You know it's coming, you dread it and you stress out about it. That is the kind of thinking that slows you down, makes you ineffective and negatively impacts your productivity. It is also the kind of thinking that separates the people who have a plan from those that do not. The planning process starts a long time before this dreaded large task is due. By putting your faith in your planning process, you can avoid this paralyzing fear that turns all of us into walking zombies.

The Bungee Cord Will Not Break, Trust Me

I'm not sure what posses people to jump off a bridge and plunge hundreds of feet and do this on the basis that someone told them that the cord that stops them from splattering into the cement will not break. That's trust. That is the kind of faith and trust you have to have in the systems and policies you have put into place to operate by. When you have that kind of faith and trust, then you will not be in a position to fear large tasks looming in front t of you because you will have prepared yourself for their arrival and be well ahead of the curve.

I'm using a large task only as an example here. It could be any stressor; a meeting, an appointment with a new client, a deadline for submitting a report, anything that causes you to think about it and then basically do nothing concrete about it.

Thinking About Something And Then Doing Nothing About It Is Worse Than Not Thinking At All

At least ignorance is bliss. Sometimes I almost admire the people who seem to be able to just drift through life without getting wound up or worked up about things, the way I seem to do. I'm not sure if being "On" all the time is the best way to go. I did mention that I admire them sometimes, didn't I?

If you want to give yourself any kind of chance to be as productive as you should be, you have to get yourself believing and then working with a system that will give you the tools to plan, organize and then implement those plans. The step we are dealing with here is taking the thought process you have and making sure that it gets turned into productive actions. The damage is done to you and your overall results when you just fret about something and then do nothing about it. That's the process that does more damage than good, a great deal more damage than good.

Good Thinking versus Bad Thinking

Good thinking is done within the confines of a system that will channel your thinking and turn it into productive actions. Bad thinking is just aimless thoughts that end up going nowhere and create anxiety and stress. If something is important enough for you to invest your time in thinking about it, it's important enough for you to take it to the next level. The next level does not mean you have to rush out and do it, far from it. You have to deal with it in a fashion that it does not hover over you and distract you from doing what you are doing right now. This area is a topic that can be covered in a book, not properly dealt with here. I will spend a few moments on it because it is a cornerstone issue.

How we handle the massive amount of things we would like to do in our lives dictates how well we do in life. Handling, processing and dealing well with our wish list in life, and we probably end up doing as well as can be expected. Handle our wish list poorly, and then we know that things will not work out the best for us. The short answer to what constitutes handling our wish list well is not allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed by it. Taking charge of our wish list means being in charge, dictating what happens when it happens. That is the reason we want to use Time Management and Productivity Maximizing systems, policies and procedures to enable us to set and drive our own agendas.

Two People Doing the Same Job Destroys Productivity Here s Why
Copyright (c) 2009 Bryan Beckstead Productivity is all about getting the maximum amount of production from the minimum amount of activity. That's why two people doing the same job destroys any pretense of getting value from either person's involvement. Let's look at the classic example. You have been planning your day's activities, in advance, as you should. You have decided that you want a specific person in your organization to perform a specific job and you have also time activated that...

Increasing Your Productivity How to Get Started
Copyright (c) 2009 Bryan Beckstead The fact that you are here is a good start. The fact that you are here indicates that there is a search on, from you, to explore and find a way to better yourself and to get better results. My position in this area has always been a two-pronged approach, to start with. Get Control of Your Time, and then make the best use of that time. Getting control of your time deals with proper Time Management (T.M.). Without a good handle on managing your time,...

Better Productivity is all About Getting your Head Straight
Copyright (c) 2009 Bryan Beckstead Is your Head Straight? Did you ever see the movie Cool Hand Luke, the one with Paul Newman? There are a number of scenes where the Sheriff tells Paul Newman, the prisoner who keeps escaping, that he has to get his head straight, so he will stop escaping. I made this connection, as tenuous as it may be, with almost all of my clients. I don't have any that continually try to escape from jail, that I know, but the connection is there nonetheless. In every...

That s How We Have Always Done It
Copyright (c) 2009 Bryan Beckstead When you hear these words, run for the hills. I cannot think of a worse reason for continuing to do something than for the simple reason that it's always been done that way. This really opens up a hornets nest, the main response is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Part of me agrees with that, the emotional side, part of me disagrees with it, the intellectual side. The Breakthrough You want to see the breakthrough, either in yourself or your people,...

Think Twice Act Once
Copyright (c) 2009 Bryan Beckstead I stole this from the carpenters; measure twice, cut once. Thanks guys. The longer I work on a project; there is always something that comes to the top to make my understanding and grasp of the subject better and better. This section is one of those improvements. Before and After If you are going to take think twice/act once philosophy literally and only limit your self to thinking twice, then it's once before you act and once after. The reason I said...

The Myth about Multi Tasking
Copyright (c) 2009 Bryan Beckstead When someone says to me that they are a great multi-tasker, I have a hard time not laughing in their face. Saying you are a great multi-tasker is a lot like saying you are a better driver when you're blindfolded with your hands tied behind your back. Let's break this statement down and see how irrational it is to say you are better at doing a number of things at once, than you are doing them one at a time. Sounds a little strange already, doesn't?...

Better Productivity is about Locking and Rocking
Copyright (c) 2009 Bryan Beckstead I'm sorry I didn't have time to get to your order today. There is not a person on the face of the earth that has not heard that from someone in their lifetime. It's a classic excuse. Unfortunately it's absolutely false. The person who just told you they did not have your order ready when it should have been because they did they did not have time to get to it was making the excuse we all make. At the end of the day, this poor clerk had probably worked...

Working Too Hard Guarantees Your Productivity Will Suffer Find out Why
Copyright (c) 2009 Bryan Beckstead This is a lesson I learned along the way. I'm not sure when but at some point I added it to my personal arsenal. Once I added it to my personal arsenal, I started to add it to my clients' arsenal and then to the seminars and then to the systems, policies, procedure for the franchisees and so on and so on. It was a big hit with everyone, especially me. I have a habit of thinking that hard work can overcome many deficiencies and that holds true in most...

Want To Increase Your Productivity Here Is How To Start
Want To Increase Your Productivity? Here Is How To Start Copyright (c) 2009 Bryan Beckstead This always a tough one to deal with. How to start something that you do not know really exists. Increasing your production, getting more done, accomplishing more in less time, these are all goals we want to obtain. How we go about achieving those puts us in no mans land. Let's map out an initial plan. Lay the Proper Foundation Before you can attack your production issues, you have to make sure...

Have a Do Not Do List
Copyright (c) 2009 Bryan Beckstead We have all heard about a To Do List; now let's look at a Do Not Do List. Increasing your productivity hinges on your ability to not keep making the same mistakes over and over again. The people who learn from their past mistakes are the people who will move forward much quicker than those who do not. There is a saying, If you do not learn from History, you will be forced to repeat it. The reason this saying is particularly important to us is twofold....
