Life as a whole could be compared to a race, match or TV contest,in which there has to be winners and losers, elation and disappointment,self-contentment and self-doubting,good conduct and bad conduct, fairplay and foulplay. So who wins and who doesn't? Why? and what are the emotions attached to both? Sporting events and TV contest shows, attract vast at- home and live audiences.Millions of people will give their money and time to watching such competitive events and sometimes between people they have never heard of! So what is it that draws viewers towards these events? :- Love of the particular sport or topic? Desire to learn the skill how to do it themselves? Attraction to the persons taking part? No,the reasons are usually little or nothing to do directly with these. The real reasons are:- People like to watch the emotions of success and of failure They subconsciously relate to similar emotions within themselves In the victor's success, they see the great pride and joy of achievement In the loser's defeat, they see the effect of deep disappointment and sense of failure. For various natural psychological reasons, they like to view the actions, performance and emotions of others. To get the huge interest and viewing audiences that they do,organiser of professional events have to promote competition. The event has to mean something important to its viewers. It needs to count for something in their minds, otherwise they will very little interest in it.If people seriously want to gain personal prowess at anything, they will get a manual or training course on it.When they give their time to watch an event, they do not want to witness purely a demonstration of rehearsed skills, they want and need to see such things as:- strife, valour, anger, fear, joy, danger, conflict, struggle, confrontation. These are the things which 'put bums on seats' as they say! The underlying connection here is that,by being able to view these emotions taking place for other people, the viewer is actually seeking a feeling of well-being for him or herself. The interest in the competitors themselves is usually merely a fleeting one. They are figuratively just 'the instruments which play the music of human feelings' Their emotions serve as a demonstration if you like,a yardstick from which comparisons with his own life can be made in some way. Now whether that person digests what he experienced second-hand by watching a contest and uses it a beneficial way is certainly questionable. Person One may take the positive thought pattern in analysing the success of winner and trying to discover why it was achieved. Then he would apply the outcome of that evaluation directly or indirectly to something important in his own life,to bring benefit and improvement to his own performance. He is also acutely aware of the emotions and plight of the loser and genuinly tries to imagine how he feels in this moment defeat.Provided the loser has conducted himself well in the situation,he will have thoughts of goodwill towards him and wish him to learn from this painful experience and enjoy success next time round. Person Two would get more pleasure from watching the face of the loser. This somehow makes him feel better, being able to see the sadness, disappointment, regret and unhappiness of a competitor who has just come up short of his expectations! Deep in his inner self, watching this offers him comfort. In some complex way he feels it provides an excuse for his own failings in his life.In watching the pain and anguish of the loser on his TV,he doesn't say to himself- 'I don't ever want to go through that'.Instead,he takes refuge and comfort in the fact that at least he is not the only one who fails at things! Let us look at the meaning of the word 'SUCCESS' for a moment. What is Success? The answer to that is a personal one to you and you must decide on your own assessment of what success (and failure) means in your life.It will be different for each of us in some way.Success could perhaps be described as "An inner feeling of happiness and contentment about a particular matter or about life overall". That golden key to success is unfortunately not discovered by everyone. We all know in our own minds whether our level of success is adequate or whether we need to make improvements. If we need admit to the need to improve things, then the second question is, do we have the determination to actually take action to implement those improvements? There is much confusion in the minds of many as to this second question. It is very possible that knowing there is a problem and not knowing how to solve it,is actually more frustrating than existing in the comaparative ignorance of not being aware of any problem, when there is one! Both scenarios are detrimental. The above tale of Persons One and Two is a short example to show contrast.Success grows from an inner confidence and rationality,a kind of balance, poise, calmness and open-mindedness.An abilty to see beyond the very base levels,to consider others. To have desire to be the best you can be,but without egotism. The Olympics are over for a couple more years but the principles which I have touched upon briefly here are timeless.Next time we speak, perhaps we will consider in more depth what makes competitors unexpectedly win or lose,in sport and in life. Our goal is of course to develop very clear vision along the Road to Success. Until then my Friends please consider carefully.Which Person are you? Mal Peters (March 2010)
