Alcohol Addiction

One of the most common types of addiction these days is alcoholism. A person who is addicted to alcohol has the tendency to continually consume a large amount of it despite knowing the destructive consequences it can bring on himself. Alcohol Addiction can have harmful effects on one's physical health, social relationships and psychological health. Most of the time, addicts have the inability to recognize these harmful effects and they still continue to consume excessive amounts of alcohol. Factors such as peer pressure, stress, gender, age, and environmental pressure can contribute a lot to a person's development of alcohol addiction.

Alcohol addiction can lead to a lot of illnesses such as heart disease, liver cirrhosis, sexual dysfunction and nutritional deficiencies. It also common results in physiological and psychological disorders. Aside from that, it can also cause social problems for alcohol addicts. One might lose a job for drinking too much and this can even lead to financial problems. Drinking alcohol has also been proven to reduce the soundness of a person's judgment. Alcohol addiction can also lead to public disorder such as drunk driving. A person's personal life can also experience the negative effects of alcohol addiction. This can cause marital problems between couples which can eventually lead to divorce. It can also be a big factor when it comes to domestic violence. This can actually have a lasting effect on the emotional development of the people involved.

It may take a long time to treat alcohol addiction. Like any other form of addiction, when alcoholics suddenly stop, they will will develop withdrawal symptoms. And most of the time, these withdrawal symptoms can be very fatal. But there are several treatments available for alcohol addiction and experts view the addiction on different perspectives. Some consider it a medical condition while others view it as a social disorder. But the common ground among these treatments is that they encourage the patients to stop consuming alcohol. After the treatment, patients are usually placed on a special program to prevent them from drinking alcohol again. Detoxification is usually the first step to treating alcohol addiction which is usually followed by patients attending self help groups or supportive therapy.

Medications are also necessarily prescribed to alcohol addicts. This is normally part of the treatment. These medication help patients develop a distaste from alcohol which will help them in controlling and eventually stopping their alcohol consumption. They do not necessarily cure the addiction but they come as a form of support to the treatment a patient is going through. Some of these medications also prevent the body from eliminating the chemicals in alcoholic drinks that cause hang overs. The patient then experiences discomfort when consuming alcohol because of the hang overs until he finally decides to stop drinking alcohol. Some of these drugs also act on neurotransmitters which help in preventing the patients to crave for alcohol.

One of the most important thing alcohol addicts need would be the support from family and friends. Most of these patients become successful in their treatment when they have a support group behind them who are constantly supporting them and guiding them through each step towards their recovery to becoming sober again.
