The Great Career Switch

The Great Career Switch
 by: David Leonhardt

"Hello. Is the doctor in?"

"I'll be with you as soon as I finish filling in these forms."

"But I really need to see a doctor."

"There, now what can I do fo – EEEEEK! You...you....you're a grizzly bear."

"Yes, ma'am. Can I see the doctor, please?

"Wh...why would you want to see the doctor? He doesn't usually see grizzly bears, you know."

"Some movie actor thought he'd be a real smarty and kiss me."

"Oh, oh, I saw that on TV. That was Brad Pitt. You're the Brad Pitt Bear."

"That's what I've been trying to tell you."

"Ooooh, you lucky bear. How did it feel?"

"Look, miss. This actor comes up and slops one on me. Now I have icky human germs. It's given me a rash. How would you like it if Brad Pitt just walked up to you and kissed you?"

"Ooooh."

"And to add insult to injury, he recorded it on national television. How would you like that?"

"Ooooh."

"And instead of giving me antibiotics, Jennifer Aniston starts pawing me."

"Ooooh."

"I feel so used."

"Wow, for a bear, you sure lead an exciting life. Kissed by Brad Pitt. Pawed by Jennifer Aniston. National television. Ooh, how thrilling."

"I wouldn't call such abuse 'thrilling'. It's not like I have an exciting job...not like yours."

"What, this? I spend all day filling in forms."

"Wow. I've never filled in forms before."

"And I have to book appointments for sick people all day long. And people who think they are sick. And people who don't know if they are sick. And sick people who think they are not sick but don't know if they are sick. And people who are sick but think they are not sick and wonder if that means they might be sick."

"Wow. I've never helped sick people before."

"And I have to keep explaining why the doctor can't see them yet, because he is busy tending to another patient. Have you any idea how it feels to have to keep explaining that over and over, day after day, week after week?"

"Pure happiness. You must have the doctor's excuses memorized by now"

"And I am stuck here under these flood lights, force-fed muzak that sounds like somebody grabbed a CD player and stuffed it with pancake mix and maple syrop until all that is left are the beatless, rythmless memory of a pre-civilization melody."

"I love muzak. Big Griz is my favorite muzak composer."

"You like that drivel? Hmph. You would probably love this job."

"You bet! Filling in forms. Talking to people. Making appointments. Basking in glorious musak – what could be better?"

"Well, you can have it then."

"Really? But, then who will kiss Brad Pitt. It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it."

"Hey. How about me?"

"You? You want to kiss Brad Pitt?"

"Sure, since you do need somebody to do it."

"That is so kind of you. You would sacrifice yourself for me."

"Yeah. Yeah. Move over. I've got to get puckering."

"And so, children, that's how the lady found herself stuck in the grizzly bear cage over there."

"Wow, Uncle Jimmy. You sure teach us a lot of great stuff every time we come to the zoo. I thought she was just a zookeeper cleaning the cage."

"Ah, yes, but she no longer has to listen to muzak, so she is happy. Different people like different things. What brings this lady happiness are not the same things as make a grizzly bear happy, for example. Understand?"

"I sure do, Uncle Jimmy. It also explains how come Dr. Block has such a grizzly receptionist."

My Career As A Hermit
by: David Leonhardt Work from home. Make big bucks in your pajamas. – typical work-from-home ad. Quick. What do writers, stay-at-home parents and online marketing geeks have in common? I mean, besides insanity? They are all hermits. The typical writer locks himself up for years brooding in a dark room, surfacing only long enough to find out who this year's American Idol is. This solitary brooding is supposed to help him develop a keen sense of the human condition. Stay-at-home...

Priorities Don t Dry Your Dishes
by: David Leonhardt Do your dishes really need to be dried, or could you just let the water evaporate? If you spend just 5 minutes per meal drying dishes, that equals a quarter of an hour per day, or 91 hours each year. Imagine spending almost four days in a row standing at the sink drying dishes. No eating. No sleeping. No bathroom breaks. Just drying dishes for four days straight. Now imagine doing something else with that time. Savoring the fresh air. Going on a camping trip....

Plastic Recycling Confusion
by: David Leonhardt CONSUMER ALERT: do not mix your food container lids. A yogurt container lid is NOT the same as a margarine container lid, even if they look the same. How do I know this? Well, here is my story. We live in a very hoity-toity county. Sure, it might look like just farm country. A lot of the houses might seem a little worse for wear. But we are very picky about what plastic we recycle. We recycle only those numbered 1 and 2. In case you did not know, your plastics...

Eight Simple Anger Management Tips
by: David Leonhardt The other night I ate at a real family restaurant. Every table had an argument going. One of the biggest obstacles to personal and career success is anger. When we fail to control our anger, we suffer several blows: Anger impedes our ability to be happy, because anger and happiness are incompatible. Anger sends marriages and other family relationships off-course. Anger means lost business, because it destroys relationships. Anger also means losing business...

A Taker Searches for happiness
by David LeonhardtThere are two kinds of people in the world: givers and takers. Takers might eat well, but givers sleep better at night. Aha!Your humble scribe has had a tough time sleeping lately. I thought it might have something to do with the happiness of keeping pace with a tornado toddler and an almost bursting-at-the-seams, more-than-pregnant wife. Or the joy of fending back the weeds threatening to overrun the house and take over the kingdom in a bloody coup. Or the excitement of...

I Saw An Angel At Work
by: David Leonhardt Sometimes you have to see something to believe it. Like angels. Unfortunately, angels are adept at not being seen, yet many people believe in them. I saw an angel at work last year. No, I did not see the halo. Or the feathered wings. Or a flowing white gown dancing in the wind. But there was no mistaking the unique handiwork. When Little Lady was just one-and-a-half years old, we were visiting friends in another town. Sunday morning, we accompanied them to...

Top Ten Reasons To Pick A Vacation Rental
by: David Leonhardt We are planning a family trip for just a few days. That is my family, my brother's family, and my other brother's family. Our mother will be joining us, too. That makes four households, seven adults and six children all under three years old. Praise to my brave (foolish?) wife who has somehow volunteered to coordinate the arrangements. Even reserving months in advance, we were unable to get four rooms adjoining at the motel, all with the right view and on the right...

Caveman Jack s Self cleaning Oven
by: David Leonhardt We live in a self-cleaning oven. Not literally, of course. We would burn up if we did. Those things get really HOT! In fact, self-cleaning ovens get so hot that they burn orange juice to a crisp. They get so hot that they melt thermometers. The produce enough hot air to replace the entire American Senate, the British Parliament and the Canadian PMO put together. Unfortunately, certain trade barriers and constitutional clauses impede the replacement of deadwood...

Very Precise Fortune Cookies
by: David Leonhardt I cracked open the fortune cookie and read the little slip of paper on the inside. Immediately I realized that it had been written by a weather forecaster. You will be approached in the late afternoon by a pink polka-dot octopus... It continued on the other side: ... and asked to provide details of your application for a yellow cloud mulching permit. Two things struck me about this particular fortune. The first is that they have come a long way in their ability to...

Serious Dieting Tips Humorous Explanations
by: David Leonhardt A few months ago, I set out to lose 22.6 pounds, then to put back on at least half of it. Huh? Anybody who's ever found herself stuck on a yo-yo diet is probably thinking that I am either crazy or planning way too hard for the inevitable yo-yo heartaches. However, my plan is more sneaky than that. First, I want to lose this rubber tire I've been carrying around my waist. Have you ever gotten stuck inside a rubber tire? It's not a pretty site. Then, I want to put...
