New England Patriots

The New England Patriots have found themselves in an interesting position for the past few years; they have been winning. For most of the Patriots existence they were, if not the laughingstock, at least the doormats of the league.

The Patriots began their turnaround with the hiring of Bill Parcells in 1993. He brought respectability and a winning mentality to the Patriots which culminated in leading the team to Super Bowl in XXXI in 1996. They lost to the Green Bay Packers, but it was quite the achievement for the Patriots.

Robert Kraft bought the team for a then record $175 million dollars in 1994. This was the next major piece of the Patriots dynasty. He was born and raised in Massachusetts and was a lifelong Patriots fan. When he bought the team he promised the fans two things. The first was to make the Patriots a winner and the second was to build a state of the art facility for them to play in. He has delivered on both.

The next piece of the dynasty also happened shortly after Mr. Kraft bought the Patriots. He met then assistant coach Bill Belichik. Five years later when the Patriots were looking for their next coach Bob Kraft remembered how impressed he was with Belichik.

Bill Belichik was under contract with the Jets at the time and the Patriots had to ship a first round draft pick to the Jets in order to sign him. IT was the best trade in Patriots history. The Jets got a pretty good defensive lineman and the Patriots got a coach who has led them to three Super Bowl wins in four years and threw in the NFL’s first 16-0 regular season as well.

Many people would argue that the Patriots run was largely a byproduct of luck. They would be correct. Of course hard work and preparation are precursors to luck so in a sense they made their own. The Patriots drafted a young man named Tom Brady in the sixth round of the draft.

Tom Brady was drafted at the 199th spot in the 2000 draft. It is safe to say the 198 players chosen before him do not compare to Brady. Since taking over for Drew Bledsoe he has led the team to three Super Bowl wins, has the fourth highest passer rating in the history of the NFL, has presided over the longest winning streak in the history of the NFL (21 straight wins spanning two seasons, and owns the record for most touchdown passes in a single season.

Mr. Kraft clearly made good on his first promise to the fans of New England by delivering three Super Bowl victories to the region. The next promise was the state of the art facility to be built in Foxboro, MA.

The brand new stadium holds 68,756 thousand fans and is named Gillette Stadium. The stadium was privately financed and it is one of the truly great places to see an NFL football game.

The Patriots are poised to remain at the top of the NFL heap for years to come as the key pieces to their dynasty remain in place.
