Understanding Eating Disorders and People with These Conditions
People with eating disorders come in different packages. Just because a person is underweight, it doesn t necessary mean that the person has an eating disorder. Everyone needs to have a clearer understanding of these conditions in order to know if a person is suffering from an eating disorder or not.
Eating disorders involve unhealthy eating habits which include rigid dieting, excessive eating, throwing up after meals, and counting calories. While it is true that these habits may form part of unhealthy dieting patterns, it is crucial to think that in the case of eating disorder, these habits are just mere shadows of self-criticism with food and weight and body image. These habits are just manifestations that something may be going terribly wrong with a person and that person might need extra help to go through the ordeal.
It is commonly believed that these disorders exist only in underweight people, in teenage and young women, and are not really dangerous. Well, you might be surprised to know the following information. Eating disorders may happen to people at any age group, any gender, and as alarming as it may sound, it can cause death and suicide if not given immediate attention. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are the common disorders in eating that are medically considered. In anorexia nervosa, the need to maintain a body image that is usually too thin against regular standards is present while in bulimia, the cycle of overeating and getting rid of the excessive intake of food thru vomiting and laxatives are present. While anorexia and bulimia are common to younger women and teenage girls, there are also cases of these disorders in men. Anorexia and bulimia target all age classes which is why everyone needs to be critical when it comes to these two. You never know when someone closest to you: a daughter, a friend, a brother or a sister, may be suffering from them.
The best way to communicate concerns regarding eating disorders is to talk about it. It is best to explain to the person that there are things that are making you concerned when it comes to their eating habits It is necessary to know that people undergoing these kinds of disorders are usually in self-denial of their conditions. If you will voice out your concerns regarding their possible eating disorder, it is best to stay supportive and tell them that you will listen whenever they are ready to accept that there might be a problem after all. Do not blame the person for what is happening to them. Most people with anorexia and bulimia have feeling of self-worthlessness, guilt, and shame and it will not be helpful for the person to hear the blame for not eating or for doing acts to rid off excess food intake. Do not give simple solutions. Anorexia and bulimia are serious conditions that require psychological help. People suffering from these conditions are not only affected physically but also emotionally which impairs their ability to see reason that eating is not a bad activity. People with anorexia and bulimia require therapy to help get through their negative thoughts and ideas regarding eating and body image.
It is important to understand people suffering from these conditions because a healthy support group can be the key for people with eating disorders to be able to get through the self-denial and seek help for their problems.
