About HDMI Inputs

HDMI became a modern technology standard in home theater systems, embraced by every producer and user around the world. HDMI technology is a fast developing one.

But what is HDMI? In this article I am going to try to give some explanatory information and useful tips about HDMI inputs, and differences of versions of HDMI interface. This information is result of an extensive research, so feel free to use as a resource.

HDMI’s History and Development

HDMI firstly designed by Hitachi, Panasonic, RCA, Silicon Image, Sony ve Toshiba companies in 2002 year. They intended HDMI to take place of DVI (Digital Video Interface) connection point. HDMI matches DVI connection. Even HDMI – DVI converters are being used for a long time. Difference between HDMI and DVI is DVI can not transfer audio signal with along side of video signal, HDMI can do both. But they use the same coding style for transfer. HDMI is compatible with digital video (DVI-D veya DVI-I) carrying DVI. DVI is used on a lot of computers and graphic cards. This means a device with DVI-D output can be connected to LCD screen from HDMI input with a convertor adapter or cable.

HDMI feature is redesigned in 2006 year. Current MDMI feature is converted to HDMI 1.3a version in this redesign.

Conversion from DVI to HDMI occurred firstly in video displaying devices and video resources. HDMI cables and features will be told later. Here are the changes in HDMI technology.

What is HDMI?

HDMI words stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. Matsushita Electric (Panasonic), Philips, Silicon Image, Sony, Thomson and Toshiba companies are the primary members of HDMI LLC. These companies wanted to create a new generation input that transfers high definition video and multi channel audio in a digital way, they weren’t after profit while creating HDMI. This means HDMI input is able to transfer video, audio and remote control signals. This interface is built on DVI connection point’s success. To understand HDMI, we must understand DVI interface first.

DVI is the abbreviation of Digital Visual Interface. This connection type is developed for uncompressed digital data transfer between computers and screens. Firstly designed for providing high bandwidth digital data transfer with low costs. Nowadays DVI interface is used commonly on LCD panels to connect other devices like computers.

HDMI Versions

HDMI v1.0: Use of HDMI started in 2002 December. Single cable was able to provide digital video – audio transfer with 4.9 GBps speed. Supported video transfer wit 165 megapixels per second speed.

HDMI v1.1: Released in May 2004, sound transfer added along side of DVD video transfer.

HDMI v1.2: Started use in August 2005;

1. One Bit audio format added (used within Super Audio CDs), sound channel number increased to 8.

2. Added low voltage source neccessity (like PCI Express Technology).

3. It also added the availability of HDMI Type A connectors for PC sources and provided local PC HDMI support.
