How Accurate Is Your Broadband Speed Test

We all want the fastest internet connection possible for the cheapest price possible, but are we really getting our money's worth once we're finally up and running? Using a broadband speed test is one easy way to find out if the money you're paying for that supposedly premium internet connection is really worth it.

Many internet service providers advertise the very top speed when they're trying to persuade you to sign up to a contract with them. Once you're connected, you might not think to check whether or not your connection is actually as fast as the advert boasted it would be. To check your internet connection, simply do a quick search in Google for a broadband speed test and see your results.

To get the most accurate possible results, there are a few things you can do to ensure that everything is running smoothly. You need to make sure you're not downloading anything to your computer, make sure all other software that may use the internet is closed down and if you are using wireless then stay as close to your wireless router as is possible.

Although this will give you an accurate reading of how your broadband performs, it isn't necessarily the most practical of solutions to a slow connection. Realistically speaking, you will more often than not have more than one page open on your internet browser and won't be able to sit by your router all day long. It's also more than likely that multiple people may need to use your broadband at once; therefore you need to make sure you've got a package that can accommodate as many users as you need without slowing the speed up a considerable amount.

Another thing to consider is downloading. Downloads can seriously affect the speed of your internet connection and can occasionally occur without you even knowing about them. Virus checkers often automatically start downloading updates without asking or your permission first. However this can easily be changed by setting a time and date for updates to occur when you know you won't be online.

It's important therefore to research broadband connection speeds in your local area thoroughly before committing yourself to a contract that may be tricky to get out of. You need to consider what exactly you will be using your connection for, as well. If you're into online gaming, a good connection is necessary, whereas if you're simply checking your email you might be able to cope with a slower line. Don't get caught out with packages that offer "up to" a particular speed as this won't necessarily be an accurate representation of what you end up with.

•Using a broadband speed test to check your broadband connection
These days it seems like everyone has broadband, but surprisingly, that doesn't necessarily mean that you have a decent connection in your home. when broadband was first introduced to replace to common dial up connections everyone marvelled at how quickly we could get to all of our favourite sites, and the internet boomed, but it would appear that in the last ten years or so, the traffic on the web has increased dramatically, and things have slowed down. Of course this isn’t actually the case -...

•It is now possible to perform a broadband speed test
The broadband marketplace is growing increasingly competitive. There are more broadband providers these days, and the market is reaching near saturation point. It is therefore hardly surprising that vendors are keen to out perform their rivals in terms of provision and service levels. But, broadband speeds do not always match the claims that are being made. One of the most important factors when using broadband is the speed at which the connection can deliver information. We are growing...

•Do You Need a Broadband Speed Test
For most of us, the days of connecting to the internet via a 56.6kbps dial-up modem are long gone. It seems incredible that less than ten years ago these were amongst the best connections available to most ordinary people. By contrast, today many people living in urban areas in the UK are able to connect to the internet at speeds in excess of 20Mbps - a truly astonishing increase in speed and power. Nevertheless this increase in maximum speed has not signalled the end of problems with slow...

•Why Test the Speed of Your Broadband Connection
Most of the time, consumers get what they pay for when they subscribe to a service. Riddled with obfuscation at every turn, the telecoms industry has provided consumers with no end of headaches when trying to discern what is...

The same is true of computers and anything related to...
