Cape Town South Africa



The city of Cape Town is home to about 3.5 million people in South Africa. Cape Town’s covered area is (948 sq mi) which is bigger than all the other cities of South Africa. Cape Town is considered as a very populous city in South Africa; commonly it is ranked as second most populous city of South Africa.

Geographically Cape Town is located on the north side of Cape Peninsula. The specialty of Cape Town is that it has a number of mountains on its land, and most of these mountains are even bigger than 1000 feet.

Winter is generally from May to September, during this period Cape Town generally receives really cool breezes and sometimes heavy rainfall. These winter months are cool enough, the temperature in the winter season ranges from 7-17 degrees.

The summer in Cape Town is very humid and hot. Cape Town gets strong winds from the south east side and these winds are commonly known to the people of Cape Town as “Cape Doctor”. They are given this name due to the fact that the people believe that these strong winds help the atmosphere of the city to be clean and healthy. During summertime the temperature levels can rise up to maximum level of 30 degrees.

Economically Cape Town is considered as the financial and economic hub of the South African Economy. The mining industry has developed itself as the most regarded industry. According to the statistics from 2002 around 5000 employers have been employed in this sector.

Cape Town also generates a high amount of revenue through tourism. For tourists visiting African countries, Cape Town has now emerged as their priority. The city has gained this status in the eyes of the tourists because of its abundance in natural beauty and a very good, fresh and healthy climate.

In the educational sector, Cape Town owns the three major universities of the country. The names of these universities are “University of the Western Cape” normally abbreviated as (UWC), “the University of Cape Town”, normally abbreviated as (UCT) and the third one is called “Cape Peninsula University of technology”, which is commonly known as (CPUT). All of these three universities today are regarded as some of the best institutions in South Africa.

Cricket and Rugby are the most watched and played games in Cape Town. Also in some areas football is liked by youngsters. In rugby league Cape Town has the team “Western Province”. Their home ground is named as Newlands Stadium. South Africa also has its own soccer league and Cape Town owns two teams which compete very strongly in the league. These teams are known as “Ajax cape Town” and “Santos”.

South Africa will be hosting FIFA World Cup 2010 so Cape Town will also be involved in the event and will host some of the games including the semi final.
