The Festivals of Coventry



Coventry is a city that has much to offer its residents and visitors, from its abundance of music, cultural venues and open air concerts, to its shopping, dining and continental markets. The city has lots of festivals throughout the year, many of them free, and whether you are visiting with your family, in the city with a loved one, or an independent traveler, then you’ll find something to do that will entertain and fascinate.

The International Jazz Festival, in its 11th year, takes place over 5 days and always has an impressive line up of international jazz stars to offer. Many of the events take place at the revered Belgrade Theatre in the city centre, and other venues and landmarks across Coventry including Coventry Cathedral, St Mary’s Guildhall, Biggin Hall, Esquires Coffee House and Taylor John’s House. Last year the main stage for the festival was in a marquee inside the Cathedral Ruins setting a great atmosphere for all festival goers.

Also well known in the area is the Godiva Festival, the UK’s biggest family festival, and free! Going since 1998, the 3 day festival attracted over 85,000 visitors last year with its diversity of music and acts. Previous years acts have included Take That and Oasis, and this year legendary Indie Scottish rockers, Idlewild, and The Twang are booked to appear, all for free! This year the festival is being held over the weekend of 2nd - 4th July and hosted at the usual venue, Coventry’s War Memorial Park. With an assortment of rock, pop, hip hop and acoustic artists, a circus, orchestras, and inspirational street entertainment, the festival provides some of the best local, national and international artists from various genres, and comedy acts that will have you laughing for weeks to come.

The annual Coventry Caribbean Festival began as a gathering of friends in 1991 and was attended by 200 people. Growing more popular over the following years, it is now an event enjoyed by a broad cross-section of people and a major feature of the summer calendar impatiently anticipated by everyone. Held at the War Memorial Park in late July you can have a fun day out with the family joining in various activities, listening to live music and dance, watching football and netball tournaments, and browsing the cultural stalls.

The Coventry Women's Festival is organized by volunteers from various organizations, with different interests all over the city and offers a diverse programme aimed at celebrating women of the past, present and future. If you want to combine your trip with a little exploration of the city then check out medieval Spon Street, it’s like going back in time with its Tudor architecture. Don’t miss the Old Windmill Pub, full of character it sells real ale and still retains some of its original features. Or head to Priory Place, a great place to sit and enjoy a drink outside one of the continental-style bars.

The Herbert is an art gallery and museum and has recently undergone a £20 million redevelopment. Now a key local attraction, it puts Coventry firmly on the map as a leading destination for arts and heritage. And if its shopping you are interested in, then make sure you visit some of the city’s designer boutiques and shopping centers before you head home tired and fulfilled.
