Exploring the Turkish Coast on Foot and by Boat

Looking for some unforgettable Turkey walks? Whether it is just on foot or by boat as well, the Turkish coast is ripe for exploration.

Turkey's west coast has long been a draw for couples and families looking for a beach holiday in the sun, but it has a powerful appeal to walkers as well. There is great natural scenery, with striking mountains and stunning coastal landscapes, combined with historical ruins and chic resort towns that make it a delightful place to go hiking. Wherever you choose to go on the coast, there are plenty of outstanding Turkey walks worth considering.

Visitors here have the choice between exploring the region primarily on foot, or chartering a boat to see the sights and explore the islands and isolated coastal regions. There are advantages to both options – for some, the experience of travelling exclusively on foot will be what they are after, whereas other will enjoy the flexibility and unique experience offered by sailing down the coast.

Walking the Coast

There are numerous walking paths scattered throughout the coast, ranging from gentle half day hikes to tough multi day treks up and down mountain paths. The Lycian Way is the classic route, and it is still one of the very best Turkey walks to go on. This epic 500 kilometer footpath, located on the southern end of the coast, explores the remains of the ancient Lycian empire, and passes through almost all of the major highlights of the region, include Patara, Kas, Olympos and Olu Deniz. From ruined cities to picture postcard beaches and starkly beautiful mountains, this truly is a route that has it all. Whether you choose to walk isolated sections of the Lycian Way or to tackle the entire route, it is an essential destination for any committed walker.

Sailing the Coast

The Lycian Way is the most famous of the Turkey walks, but if you want to try something a little different, you can go by sea. Sailing down the coast allows you to cherry pick the very best highlights that the region has to offer, and living and eating on board your own chartered vessel can be an unforgettable experience. It also allows those with a passion for swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling to enjoy these activities in addition to the great walking that is available.

The Gocek Islands are a particular highlight that those with a boat can experience. This collection of twelve islands, located just off the coast, are an unspoilt paradise of pine forests and cove beaches. Combining sailing and walking is the best way to experience these unique and beautiful islands, and a visit to the Gocek Islands should certainly be part of any Turkish sailing and walking itinerary.

Whether you choose to go by boat on entirely on your own two feet, the Turkish coast is crying out to be explored. For the very best Turkey walks, this is the place to go – nowhere else in the country can provide such a rich variety of landscapes, or so many historically significant sights.
