Travel journals can be kept on a computer or in an old-fashioned notebook or diary. Depending on what your ultimate goals are, they can have room to include pictures and other souvenirs, or strictly be devoted to writing. Whether or not you plan to share your travel journal with others is another important decision that you'll need to make early on in the travel journal process. Most people do decide to let others read their travel journals, and sharing them can be a huge part of the fun that goes along with them. Make Notes Throughout The Day Most of the time, you're going to be too busy sightseeing to sit down and make entries into your travel journal during your vacation. Instead, invest in a small spiral notepad that you can tuck into a pocket, backpack or other convenient place. During the day, whenever something especially piques your interest - or any time an especially interesting thought or observation occurs to you - you can get out your notepad and jot a quick note about it. Later, these notes will help jog your memory so that you can create more meaningful journal entries. Come Up With A Theme Or Title For Each Day At the end of each day, sit back and reflect on everything you've seen. What made the biggest impression on you? Did anything special really stand out and color the entire experience? Try to boil down those thoughts and feelings to their essence and come up with a title that will reflect the running theme of the day. If you'd like, you can come up with something witty, clever and funny - or something deep, reflective and meaningful. The choice is entirely up to you! Include Your Thoughts And Feelings About What You've Seen While simply writing down and describing every thing you saw during the day is fine, travel journals are generally more interesting when they include a healthy dose of personal insight. The tone can be entirely up to you; if you are more comfortable with a lighthearted - or even comedic - slant, then go for it. If drama and suspense are more your cup of tea, have at it. The point is, you should write in the style that is the most natural and comfortable for you. Don't Fret About Grammar And Spelling Since a travel journal is a personal memento and not something that's going to be published for the whole world to see, you don't necessarily have to worry about coming up with exceptional grammar and spelling. Worrying about the details of the proper usage of a particular word or about where to place a certain kind of punctuation can trip you up and make your writing sound unnatural and stilted. Instead of worrying about the mechanics of writing, focus on expressing your thoughts and feelings as naturally as possible. The writing - and travel journal - will be the better for it. Pay Attention To Small Details Try to include a few small details here and there in your travel journal. Sure, the Eiffel Tower is huge and crowded - but what does its metal look like up close? What sorts of trees and plants are nearby? Did you notice anything unusual or an interesting person? These small observations can give your journal a more personal flavor - and they can help you really remember what it was like to visit whatever place you're describing. Above all else, though, have fun writing your journal - it's for you, after all!
