Bergamo Italy

In the country of Italy you will find the town of Bergamo. This town is located in the Lombardy area of Italy. It is about 40 kilometres northeast of Milan. As you look around this town you can spy the foothills of the Alps immediately to the north of the town where they can be seen to begin. In its early history the town of Bergamo occupied the site of the ancient town of Bergomum which was founded as a settlement of Cenomani Celtic tribe’s people. In 49BC this settlement came under Roman rule and it was an important place on the military road between the cities of Friuli and Raetia. Unfortunately the town was destroyed by Attila in the 5th century.

After Attila left the area the town of Bergamo was slowly rebuilt and began to take its place in Italy. Today you will see a thriving and modern town which offers its visitors many interesting places to visit. These places will include sights such as the Cappella Colleoni – this is the Colleoni Chapel- which was annexed to the Santa Maria Maggiore. The chapel is a masterwork of decorative art and Renaissance architecture. Within the chapel you will find the tomb of the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni.

From the Colleoni Chapel you may wish to see the Palazzo Nuovo in Bergamo. This palazzo was designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi in the early 17th century. While work on the palazzo started during this period of time the completion was done only in 1928. Regardless of the length of time it took to build this palazzo you will find that it is a magnificent building. Lovers of nature will revel in being able to see various plants and flowers which grow in magnificent abandon in Bergamo. One of the best places to see these plants and many others would be that of the Orto Botanico di Bergamo “Lorenzo Rota”. This is Bergamo’s fantastic botanical gardens.

From here your next visit in Bergamo should take you to San Michele al Pozzo Bianco. This church which was built in the 12th century has many wonderful frescos which are from the 12th to the 16th centuries. Among these magnificent looking frescos you will also have the chance of looking at some paintings which were done by Lorenzo Lotto.

During your visit to Bergamo you will find the sights can be found in two areas. These areas are the Città alta which is the upper city and the Città bassa which is the lower city. The upper city is a medieval hilltop town which is surrounded by a 17th century cyclopic walls which have been built to be defensive. The upper and the lower segments of the town are connected by roads, footpaths and a cable car/funicular.

This information will help you to see each of the different sights in each part of the town. The sights which were listed above, all fall under ones which can be found in the upper city. The Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea which is a gallery of modern art and also contemporary art can be found in the lower city.

So now that you know some of the sights that you can find in Bergamo all that remains is for you to visit this town and enjoy your vacation here. So go ahead and start packing for a lovely holiday in Bergamo.
