This can be what happens when you come to the Big Island of Hawaii. As a resident of this beautiful island, and a Certified Tour Guide for over 15 years, I get this question a lot. How come they (the State) dont have many signs? Why dont stores, restaurants and resorts put up big neon signs to help us find them? These are all good questions. I have to agree that more signage would be helpful to the visitor, especially for places of interest. However, the State of Hawaii has passed sign ordinances, limiting the size and amount of signs that can be used, to preserve the natural beauty of the island. Visitors perceive the logic, but it doesnt help them find sites any easier. Plus, when signs are available, they are in Hawaiian, which most visitors do not understand or pronounce well.
