Article writing is one of the ways in which we promote our webpages, but writing doesn’t come naturally to everyone. There are those of us who view it as a necessary evil. So, we decide to bite the bullet and go for it. Then we hit the dreaded brick wall – the blank sheet. It stares back as you, tantalising you with visions of consummately-written articles. And that’s when page fright steps in. Page fright, often known by its alter ego, “writer’s block”, can affect anyone at any time. Even seasoned writers with more articles under their belt than you can shake a stick at come up against it. Nothing seems to flow, nothing gels and even putting pen to paper is all but impossible. Before the writing gremlins get a foothold, take a step back and a deep breath. You can do this. Just follow these simple guidelines to get the creative juices flowing again. 1 Write down the first thing that comes into your head. It might not even be relevant to your article but just getting something down on that blank page will do wonders for your mindset. After all, it can be deleted at the touch of a key (or crossed out, if you’re writing the article by hand) 2 Now that you have got past the “blank page”, write down the subject of your article. It may be in your head but it needs to be down on paper or computer screen, where you can see it 3 Make as many notes as you feel necessary on this subject – these will form the main body of the article 4 Make sub-headings as you go along and relegate the appropriate information into these 5 Put the kettle on and relax 6 Begin collating all the information, formatting it into easily readable paragraphs. Avoid any fluff or filler, just stick to the relevant facts. If you’re working on a pc, you may find it easier to copy, cut and paste your paragraphs until you are happy with the layout 7 Make sure your article flows. Write as if you’re talking to your reader, not at them. Don’t try to be clever or use words that you don’t normally use. Why try to be something you’re not? 8 Slowly but surely, build your article. Make sure you include relevant keywords both in your title and in the main body. Give your reader good quality content. Answer their questions, satisfy their curiosity Page fright can strike at any time but it doesn’t have to be a disaster. Taking a break can help consolidate your thoughts, so don’t feel guilty about having a coffee or taking a walk. The blank page will only win if you give in to it – just get something down on paper, no matter what. Page fright can be conquered simply by writing.
